Black women and exercise?
Is hair a big factor as to why so many of us don’t exercise? Do you think this is contributing to the obesity epidemic in our community? I’m natural and don’t have this problem but I realize most of us straighten our hair.
Dick,
A lot of black women straighten their hair so if it gets wet it will “revert back” to its natural state. I think this keeps many of us from exercising.
Denise Robinson,
80% of black women are overweight or obese. It is much more prevalent in our group and I want to know why. Could it just be genetics? Diet?
I starred this question as interesting, as it’s something that I’ve thought of myself. I personally don’t exercise much because I don’t have the time. I exercised a lot last year, at least three or four times a week and I had a relaxer then. My hair wasn’t really affected but I know that if I had exercised more strenuously, that would have caused some problems for me. When I was at the hair dresser the other day I overheard a woman complain that her relaxer never kept because she exercised so often.
I know how important hair is for black women so this could very well be the reason that some black women don’t exercise much. I don’t think I’d go so far as to say this is why many are obese because many Americans in general are obese, so there must be other reasons. I’d say that the American diet and lackluster lifestyle is more to blame for the obesity rates.

As part of ongoing efforts to motivate young people to participate in the political process, the League of Young Voters Education Fund (LYVEF) was associated recently with the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation's (NCBCP) Black Youth Vote! (BYV!) For the formation of an innovative participatory citizens in North High School in Des Moines, IA. The youth later participated in the Black and Brown Presidential Forum Debate.
Organizers stressed the importance vote in the January 3, 2008 primary, although people of color represent less than six per cent of the population of Iowa "We are working diligently to educate young people about the role of primaries in the political process, "said Rob" Biko "Baker, director of LYVEF organization." We used edutainment – Spoken word and writing exercises – to tie the struggles faced by young people voting strength. "
"Young people must learn the entire process. From youth-oriented issues on the table getting during the primaries, to elected officials accountable once they are operating in the office, " adds Melanie L. Campbell, executive director and CEO of the NCBCP. "This is one of many trainings we are hosting across the country to educate young people about the importance of voting and showing them how to mobilize their friends and families on issues important to them. "
Last month Black Youth Vote! organized a comprehensive training in Washington, DC to prepare state BYV! coordinators to enter their community and to galvanize young voters. About 80 youth organizers around the country participate in interactive workshops and roundtables to train them on voter registration, mobilization of young voters, protection of voters, and educate youth on issues impacting their populations.
"There are a number of issues important to Black youth including unprecedented levels of African American incarceration, expulsion rates of high school, and its economic future, "said Jordan Thierry, BYV! national coordinator. "Black Youth Vote! connects the dots between the vote and resolve issues come to their daily lives."
"It'sa new day in America. Black youth under 35 represent nearly 50 percent of Black American electorate, "says Campbell." Young Black have the power to impact the serious problems facing the Black Community. Their movement was energized with historic youth voter participation in elections in 2004, followed by the massive demonstration in Jena. Black Youth Vote! is helping to channel the energy of motion in the 2008 election cycle, "he adds.
Black Youth Vote!, (Www.ncbcp.org) of the youth division of the NCBCP, is a national coalition base of organizations and individuals committed to increasing political and civic involvement among Black men and women 18-35. Founded in 1996, the organization led by young educates young adults about the political process and trains them to identify issues and influence public policy through participation. BYV! voters has been instrumental reversing the downward spiral among young voters and education that are increasingly marginalized in the electoral and legislative process.
The League of Young Voters Education Fund (http://youngvoter.org/iowa) allows young people nationwide to participate in the democratic process process with a focus on young people without college for low-income communities and communities of color. Founded in 2003, becomes relevant LYVEF civic participation in the meeting of young people where they are, working on issues that affect their lives, and provides tools, training and support to become viable players in the civic process.
