Heart rate/pulse reading on pedometer? Please help!?

I have just got a box of pedometers to use with my students. While testing them with other adults whose heart rates are each around 80-90, mine either shows 0 or between 141-171 while resting (finger pulse) I tried a friends heart rate monitor that fits around torso & got 88, but still get either no reading or very high with finger pulse????

Your monitor may be defective or it is not being used correctly. They are quite easy to use, so I am going to assume that it is defective. Call the company to get a replacement. Also, the heart monitors that are worn on the wrist provide better results. Best of luck
